March 2010
  • A Word from Horizon
Join us for the Annual Election & Board Meeting on Tuesday, March 16, 2010, 6:30 PM at the Clubhouse. And, if you have not already done so, please return your ballot TODAY! We need 50% of the membership represented in person or by ballot to establish quorum to conduct the meeting. Representatives from Consolidated Disposal Service will attend the Annual Meeting on March 16th to make a presentation on their trash-recycling separation process.

Trash pick up – holiday schedule: Trash pick-up generally occurs on Tuesdays. This year, there are two holidays that will cause our trash pick-up day to shift from Tuesday to Wednesday: Monday, May 31st is Memorial Day – pick up that week with be Wednesday, June 2nd. Monday, September 6th is Labor Day – pick up that week will be Wednesday, September 8th.

Noise Travels: Due to the close proximity of units within the complex, noise carries easily between units, especially in the driveways. Please be considerate of your neighbors when you are on your patio or in the driveway. Voices should be lowered in the common area, and car stereo volumes should be reduced within the complex.
  • Conserve water:
Did you know that the average leaky faucet can waste from 1000 - 2000 gallons per year? Leaking toilets are even worse, as they can waste up to 500 gallons of water in a single day! By taking the time to fix leaking faucets and toilets, you will not only be reducing your water consumption rates, but you will also be doing your part to protect one of our most precious natural resources, water! From NSF-public health & safety company.

This will also help your HOA fees. Your help to conserve will help keep fees down.
  • It's your lucky day:
Need a little luck? There are three good-luck traditions associated with St. Patrick's Day:

    1. Find a four-leaf clover: The Druids believed that a four-leaf clover could help in spotting witches or other demons. Some modern-day spiritualists claim that a four-leaf clover releases energy and helps one's judgment. Yet others feel that finding a four-leaf clover brings good fortune, not just on St. Patrick's Day.
    2. Wear green: This color represents Ireland (the "Emerald Isle"), the shamrock, and spring. It is as closely associated with St. Patrick's Day as red is with Valentine's Day. Many schoolchildren and others — Irish or not — wear green on St. Patrick's Day.
    3. Kiss the Blarney Stone: This famous stone is set in one of the walls in the tower of the Blarney Castle. It's thought that an old woman cast a spell on the stone as a reward to the king for saving someone from drowning. Under the spell, the king spoke eloquently. According to legend, kissing the Blarney Stone brings the kisser "persuasive eloquence" ("blarney"). Because of the stone's location, it's no easy feat to kiss it. One must bend over backwards and hold onto a metal bar.

May the leprechauns be near you
to spread luck along your way.
And may all the Irish angels
Smile upon you St. Patrick's Day.

Celebrate St. Patrick's Day with this easy after-school snack.

    Ingredients
    - Green pepper
    - English muffin
    - Cheddar cheese

    Instructions
    1. To make one, slice a green pepper crosswise near the pointed end to get a small, three-lobed shamrock shape. (If your pepper has four lobes, you've got a lucky clover instead.) Cut a small slice for a stem.
    2. Toast half an English muffin, and then top it with a slice of Cheddar and the pepper shamrock. Place the muffin on a tray, and then broil it in a toaster oven until the cheese is melted.
